Diesel emissions from diesel engines create serious health problems for adults and are extremely harmful to children and the elderly. Serious health problems include asthma, lung cancer and various other respiratory diseases resulting in thousands of premature deaths, lost work days, and many other negative health impacts each year. Reducing emissions from diesel engines is one of the most important air quality issues today. To meet the challenge of reducing pollution from diesel vehicles, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) established the National Clean Diesel Campaign (NCDC). The NCDC comprises regulatory programs to address new engines and innovative programs to address the millions of diesel engines currently in use.
Since 2000, EPA has awarded over 300 grants for diesel reduction projects nationwide through the NCDC. The State of Alaska has had past success with the Clean Diesel Funding Program through the NCDC. The State of Alaska would like to continue such projects so pollution levels can further be decreased from Alaska's diesel fleet.Follow the links below for further information.
