Rounded Rectangle: Volcanic Ash Guidance for Public Water System Personnel

For background regarding newly fallen volcanic ash and its potential effects on water systems, please reference the below document:

•  The Effects of Volcanic Ash on Water Supplies

In general, remember to reference your emergency response plan which should include proactive steps such as securing your facilities and protecting electronics and exposed equipment, as well as distributing PPE such as dust masks and goggles to personnel . T o address the high demand for water during cleanup operations, be prepared to consider the possible need for a public notice outlining usage restrictions . Additionally, if reasonable, strive to maintain full capacity of your finished water storage.

Surface water systems face greater vulnerability to the detrimental impacts of volcanic ash. If your water quality is impacted in the event of an eruption, below are examples of Drinking Water Advisories you may choose to issue to your respective communities:

•  Nonfiltered Surface Water System

•  Filtered Surface Water System

Please remember to contact your local Drinking Water Office when issuing an advisory.
