14th Annual Alaska Tribal Conference on Environmental Management, held October 2008
Brownfield staff from DEC and the Yukon River Inter-Tribal Watershed Council shared a presentation at the Alaska Tribal Conference on Environmental Management (ATCEM) on October 28 in Anchorage. The DEC presentations, in Microsoft Power Point, are available for download here. ATCEM is sponsored by the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium, and is a great opportunity to meet and learn from Tribal environmental coordinators from all over Alaska. It is the largest annual Tribal environmental conference in the state. We appreciate the opportunity to share information and meet people who share our goals of improving Alaska’s environmental health. Thank you to everyone who participated, and we look forward to seeing you again at next year’s ATCEM.

A few years ago, using the word "brownfield" in a conversation would get you raised eyebrows or pained expressions. It depended on whether your listener had never heard of one or was in the process of dealing with one. No more. Brownfields are quickly becoming recognized as a viable and affordable path to economic development and a cleaner environment.
To encourage this building momentum, EPA Region 10 publishes Building on Brownfields, a monthly e-newsletter on economic and environmental gain through redevelopment in Alaska, Idaho, Oregon and Washington. Written as a guide for city planners, developers, environmental groups, local governments, property owners and more, each issue includes:
- Real-life stories of successful redevelopments
- Information on the logistics of buying, cleaning up and building on brownfields
- Profiles of the key players in EPA Region 10
- Upcoming brownfields events
