Incident Background

Following an explosion on April 20, 2010, the Deepwater Horizon oil rig caught fire and sank. The blowout preventer failed to activate, resulting in an uncontrolled release of oil from the damaged wellhead. Efforts to control the release have not been successful and the spill continues to threaten the shores of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida.

We all have a stake in this disaster and in assisting the communities that are being impacted by the spill. We are also committed to ensuring that adequate response equipment and personnel remain to protect the environment, economy, cultural resources and quality of life here in Alaska.

This site has been established to provide information on how Alaska government agencies, Federal agencies with operations in Alaska and Alaska businesses are providing assistance to the Deepwater Horizon Response.

Emergency Management Assistance Compact (EMAC)

This compact is a formalized agreement among many states, including Alaska, to provide mutual assistance to participating states during emergencies or disasters. The agreement sets forth the parameters for requesting assistance from other states and ensures prompt, full and effective utilization of states’ resources. It is the vehicle for providing assistance to other states.

Update

July 22, 2010 –

  • Staff from ADEC’s Division of Spill Prevention and Response had a teleconference with the State of Florida to provide technical assistance and advice pertaining to Alaska’s knowledge and lessons learned of cost recovery from the Exxon Valdez oil spill and Alaska’s current cost recovery process.  Alaska emailed examples of cost documentation documents and links to websites as requested by Florida.
